Future vs. Past in the Lifted Veil

In the Lifted Veil, Latimer is constantly looking to the future. His life is guided by what he knows will come next. He knows where he will be, he knows who he will marry. He even knows when he will die. I think it is interesting that when he stops looking at the future, it is his past that saves him. It is the things that he turned away from in his past that come to give him good graces in the future. When his wife Bertha would have had him killed because he had refused to look into her mind, it was his old acquaintance Meunier that saved him. It was through that thing called science that he had held no interest in that saved his life, by bringing out Mrs. Archer's last words.
When you know everything that will happen in the future, and you see the hidden corners of others' minds, life loses its spark. Life is chaotic. The phrase, "the greater the risk, the greater the reward", doesn't really apply if one knows everything that's going to happen. Curiosity is a driving force. I think that Latimer shut himself in because he had no mysteries to seek. For that reason, I think the reason Meunier was able to bring Latimer back to himself was because Meunier himself was a mystery to Latimer. Although Latimer could read Meunier's mind, he didn't understand Meunier and the way he thought. He didn't understand all the science and Meunier's good natured desire to know. It is that mystery that ended up saving him for another day.
