At this point of the story, we learn through letters Elizabeth’s concern for Victor’s health, as it has been pointed out that Victor has not been writing his letters himself, but dictating them to Clerval.  Victor awaits a letter from his father to return home to Geneva, and in that letter he discovers that William has been murdered.  Victor’s father pleads him to come to console Elizabeth.  Justine has been accused of murdering William because she has been caught with key evidence relating to the case.  Justine pleads guilty, contrary to the true situation, and she is sent to execution.
