Some Questions and Pages for Thought!

Hi folks,

As you finish up J&H, as well as read From Hell, for Friday, here are some of the questions your classmates have and/or pages they would like us to interrogate:

Questions:
1. If you are the chief of sinners, can you really also be the chief of sufferers?
2. Jekyll references "caging his devil". Do you think that all humans cage their "devils"? And if humans let their devils out, would they all be as quick to murder as Hyde?
3. Do the servants know about Jekyll and Hyde?
4. When U tells J that he had a "fine escape," J replies that he had a lesson. How do we gain greater lessons after such escapes?
5. How are the two characters consistently drawing connections btwn J and H?
6. Why do we think Mr. Hyde makes U so uncomfortable? Why is he so relieved when Poole returns?
7. Why did the transformation of J have the effect upon L as it did, to cause his almost immediate death afterwards?
8. What is the purpose of using the dashes for year numbers?
9. Seriously, why does Poole wait so long to notice/say anything about his master's behavior?
10. Discuss master/slave dynamic present in this novel. Either w/ H/J or J/servants.
